Self-Sufficient Luxury Home on Kauai's North Shore

Homes that are “off the grid” or designed to generate their own power, water, and food, don’t often fall in the “luxury” real estate category. In fact, they sometimes feel more like campgrounds than luxury retreats. When I first started selling real estate on Kauai in the late 1990’s, there was a running joke among Realtors about how often we met people who wanted to establish a self-sufficient retreat-style property. In short, they all wanted to create almost exactly the same thing…

  • A property on acreage that sustain a large fruit orchard and gardens.
  • A house that would be separated into different pods, and would provide distinct spaces for yoga, artwork, dance, massage… often courtyards for meditation, and a central structure for gathering and cooking.
  • An entirely self-sufficient property, with solar power, well water and/or water catchment, and a lot of growing food.

Well, now it’s available, and it was done right. It’s not some half-assed fantasy… this property is truly a luxury retreat. MLS #245648:

A free-form saline pool sits below the main residence, with a barbecue gazebo and a private pool-side massage room.

Huge vaulted ceilings, cedar walls, tigerwood and slate floors, granite counter tops, and high-end stainless appliances in the kitchen/dining area.

The mature orchard, with so many varieties of avocado, it may offer avocados in every month of the year. Coconuts, citrus, mango, papaya, bananas, breadfruit, noni, starfruit, jackfruit, macadamia nut, kukui nut, allspice and more…

A flowing stream, with gorgeous mature landscaping. The location of this property shouldn’t be overlooked, either. It’s about a 1/2 mile from Kahili Bay (Rock Quarry’s Beach), and just outside of Kilauea town. Yet, the acreage affords a serene privacy.

We’ll be holding this house open this coming Wednesday, June 22nd from 10am to 1pm. If you happen to be on Kauai, feel free to come by and take a look.
