Saddle Up: My 4th of July at the Waimea Rodeo

This might be surprising, but on the Big Island, we actually have a deep-rooted paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) culture.

Hawaiʻi’s ranching traditions date back to 1847, and it’s still very much alive and well on the Big Island! Waimea is home to the historic Parker Ranch, which is one of the oldest and largest ranches in the country. I’m someone who grew up loving horses, so I’ve always felt drawn to the Big Island’s ranching communities.

The Morning Crowd & Bleacher Life

This year for the 4th of July, I decided to go to the annual Waimea Rodeo. Thankfully, I got there pretty early because by the time the opening events started, the stands were packed. I mean standing room only left by 10am. I was pleased to see so many people out celebrating the 4th at the rodeo. I also quickly learned a helpful tip for next time: bring a seat cushion!

Roping, Racing, and Pure Talent

The real magic started when the riders took to the arena. It was cool to see the different generations of paniolo tradition that were on display; I especially loved seeing the young riders. I was cheering and yelling right alongside the crowd.

Local Flavor at Every Turn

Of course, no rodeo is complete without good food. From plate lunches to sweet treats, the food vendors offered something for everyone.

I should not have had breakfast prior to arriving, as the lines were not as long at the mooring, but I ended up waiting in the long line and took home a large plate for lunch to enjoy.

Why It Mattered

This was such a great reminder of how diverse Hawaiʻi really is. The paniolo culture is a big part of the Big Island’s identity, and the Waimea Rodeo really is a celebration of that. I left the rodeo full of good food and gratitude to be a part of this community.

If you ever find yourself on the Big Island around the 4th of July, come on down to the Waimea Rodeo to celebrate Hawaiʻi’s paniolo heritage. I always love to share my experiences that make living on the Big Island so vibrant. It’s one of the many reasons I love calling it home.

With Aloha,
Leeana
