May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii Nei
In the 1920s, poet Don Blanding came up with an idea we continue to celebrate until today. With the help of Honolulu Star-Bulletin journalist, Grace Tower Warrend – “Lei Day” became May Day.
What is a lei? It is a garland made with flowers/flora (or even feathers). A Hawaiian custom practiced today – once given as respect, now given out of love, welcome, and celebration.
