Kamuela Hardwoods – Dedicated to Recovering, Reclaiming and Salvaging Hawai’i Woods.

There is something about the scent of fresh wood shavings that makes my heart happy. Being married to a woodworker for the past 28 years might have something to do with it. Especially when the smell equates to something he is working on for our home or a gift for a treasured client. Either way, it brings a smile to my face. One of the things that took a little bit of time to accomplish when we moved here was locating all of the fun wood places. All of those places that seem to be well kept secrets between woodworkers and hobbyists alike. Several years ago,  stumbled across Kamuela Hardwoods, which was tucked away behind Tropical Dreams Ice Cream in Kamuela, my go-to for amazing ice cream. Over the years, we have watched them grow and evolve into an amazing company that is dedicated to recovering, reclaiming and salvaging wood here on Hawai’i island.

Kamuela Hardwoods is co-owned by Alex Woodbury who ironically did our home inspection when we moved here and Josh Greenspan who is a certified arborist. They have an amazing team of mill operators, fine woodworkers and office staff that complete the ‘ohana.

Some fun facts about Kamuela Hardwoods taken from their website. “We take pride in reclaiming, recovering, and salvaging wood that would otherwise have been burned, chipped, or thrown in our landfills. In doing so, we turn under appreciated materials into high quality lumber for users in the Hawaiian islands and elsewhere. We specialize in hardwoods culled from the urban landscape such as Eucalyptus Robusta, Monkey Pod, Mango, Acacia Koa, Lehua Ohia, Eucalyptus Saligna, Lychee, Toon, Potocarpus, Silk Oak, Blue Gum, Red Gum, Australian Black Wood, Citrus Wood, Keawe and many others. We are a minimal waste company and we utilize everything we receive. Tree material is processed into lumber or slabs. The slash is used as utility lumber, stickers, or garden bed/fence rails, and our sawdust/chips are turned into valuable mulch and soil amendments. Our equipment is operated off of locally produced bio-diesel and we have a strict recycling program in place.”

If you are looking for a company that cares about the environment, gives back to the community, understands and practices sustainability then this is the place. I am proud to say that our kitchen cabinets, customer gifts and my one-of-a-kind Koa wood office desk wood have all come from Kamuela Hardwoods.

The evolution of my amazing desk. Mahalo to Elton Alameda of EA Fine Woodworking for helping Evert out on this one! I am beyond ecstatic with the finished product.

Make sure to check them out at their new location which is in the newly renovated building that used to be the Parker Ranch slaughterhouse which makes me VERY happy. I love the way they kept a lot of the building intact. It is like stepping back in time.
