Covid-19 Update From Kauai

We wanted to take this opportunity to give you some updates from the ground here on Kauai since the Covid-19 pandemic began. For reflections on real estate, please visit our blog about the Kauai real estate market for some market statistics and reflections about the market since the pandemic began and what is yet to come.

After experiencing no reported cases on the island of Kauai between April 7 and June 13, we saw sporadic cases reported between June 13 and July 7. During this period of time, there was a total of 22 cases. All of these cases are reported as fully recovered and we have now gone 15 days (as of the time of this writing) with no reported new cases. That said, we feel it’s fair to reiterate what we stated in our initial Covid-19 update; that is to say, Kauai’s direct experience with virus infections have been quite subdued here.

Since our previous report on this topic back in May, there have been several policy changes affecting the state and the island. A 14-day quarantine period is no longer required for inter-island travel. This quarantine period is still in effect however for travel from the mainland. A policy had briefly been announced to lift the quarantine period for travels holding proof of a negative coronavirus test within specified time frames prior to travel; however, this quarantine policy has been extended until the end of August as of right now.

Kauai’s natural beauty and the playgrounds of the ocean, the beaches, and the mountains are a great resource for everybody’s mental and physical health out here. We are grateful to have Kauai’s outdoor summer activities such as diving, surfing, windsurfing and hiking to keep us safely entertained in this new paradigm.

We continue to send our condolences to those who are experiencing great loss. Although the deaths and physical impacts have been far less in Hawaii and Kauai, the economic impact of the virus has been very significant, as our tourism driven economy continues to be on a pause.
