West Maui Bike Path

Can you imagine riding your bicycle across West Maui without being on the highway? I can! Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization is developing a 25-mile bike path that would stretch from Ukumehame to Lipoa Point. The path is called, The West Maui Greenway. There are different routes in discussion and one being the old cane haul roads along with using stretches of the Sugar Cane Train track.

On March 22nd, I attended their second meeting via zoom, where the community had a chance to voice their opinions, concerns, route suggestions and participate in a route survey. I found the meeting quite informative and engaging with the forty participants. MMPO really seemed to hear and take note of all suggestions and concerns of everyone in the meeting. There are two more meetings in June and August. This project is in the beginning stage and needs the guidance and support of the community. I highly recommend that you attend.

Project Vision

“To create a safe, comfortable, and joyful greenway path through West Maui that serves as both a recreational ribbon and a new transportation facility, connecting people to destinations while highlighting the diverse history, landscape, and culture of the region.”

Project Goals

  • Foster Community
  • Bring Joy
  • Strengthen Connectivity
  • Promote Safety and Comfort
  • Ensure Feasibility

I believe this is a significant asset to our community for residents and visitors. Having an alternative way to navigate the West Side without using a car is a considerable bonus.

I urge everyone to be involved with the proposed routes and learn how they could possibly effect your neighborhood (Wahikuli) and potential sacred grounds. This is an excellent opportunity for the community to work with MMPO on restoration, preservation, and education of ancient sites that could have possible exposure from the path. The West Maui Greenway adds another layer to the outdoor activities we enjoy here on Maui.

Great idea, a lot safer than riding on the highway

That is really exciting that we would have a safe bike path through the very busy west side. Fully support this new greenway and all of the people who have put their time and effort into getting it to this stage.
