Welcome to Ho’olawa Point Subdivision in Haiku, Maui – Neighborhood Video

Where can I find an oceanfront spot in Haiku Maui, with a real feeling of friendliness and community?

How about Ho’olawa Point, Huelo? At the end of Ho’olawa Road, at the very edge of the land, is a small subdivision with only 5 large lots. Owners here are building their dream homes, working on their landscaping, and living a lifestyle that’s completely off the grid. The whole neighborhood is all about harnessing the sun for power, and relying on themselves to make a better life. Innovative architectural styles and traditional homes come together here. Rules are minimal and space is expansive.

Ocean access is convenient along a footpath to the small rocky bay below. You’ll see turtles and whales, and long-tailed tropicbirds. Because the cooling trade winds blow in here most days, you won’t need heating or air conditioning. The sun rises up out of the ocean in some months.

What can I grow at Ho’olawa Point in Haiku?

In this mild climate with plenty of gentle rain, you can grow many kinds of fruit trees and vegetables, ornamental tropical flowers, and more. One neighbor has an abundance of papaya trees, and they give away the fruit. Another neighbor grows all kinds of lemons and citrus in his little orchard protected from the wind by a row of majestic black bamboo. Palm trees and bananas thrive at this elevation.

What can I build at Ho’olawa Point?

Agricultural zoning allows for two dwellings, and one can be as large as you like, while the other should be 1,000 square feet or less. With an approved farm plan you can also build barns, garages, sheds, and other AG buildings as needed, as you can see in this picture.

I hope you sell to people who are full time Maui Residents or intend to be rather than folks wanting to build a vacation home.

Best Wishes.
