The Waikoloa Area: A Diamond in the Rough

Since the Big Island is relatively the youngest of the Hawaiian Island chain, it is still actively creating beaches. So finding a long, white, sandy beach along the seemingly endless stretches of ebony black lava is like finding a diamond in the rough.

Many people don’t realize what a variety of wonderful things the Waikoloa area has to offer. When driving North on Highway 19 from the Keahole Kona International Airport, make sure not to miss Waikoloa Beach Drive on your left. It is about 17 miles from the airport and definitely worth your time. Here and nearby you will find three of the top ten beaches on the island.

Popular Beaches

Hapuna Beach is one of the best rated beaches on the island thanks to its clean, long, white sandy beach and pristine blue waters. It is ideal for friends, family, and fun in the sun all year round.

Anaeho’omalu, or Waikoloa Beach, is also well known for its island style beauty. Teeming with colorful tropical life below the ocean surface as well as turtles basking in the warm sun along the beach, it is a must-see.

Heading North about ten more miles, you will find another amazing beach to spend the day and create vacation memories. The Mauna Kea Beach sprawls alongside one of the clearest stretches of water that you will ever find. It is like snorkeling in an aquarium and rarely gets crowded, so you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings almost as if it was your own private beach.

What Makes it an Unforgettable Vacation Destination?

Not only does the Waikoloa area offer unforgettable beaches, it is also a hub of activity. Shopping options abound at both the Queens and Kings Shops and a wide variety of restaurants with international flare to tempt any worldly palate.

At any time of the year, there are various family-friendly activities and events. Incredible hotels such as the luxurious Waikoloa Beach Marriot Resort & Spa capture the breathtaking style of the islands and will make your vacation one to remember.

If you want to stay somewhere a little more secluded and private, try the beautifully situated condos at Halii Kai with their oceanfront pool and fitness facility. Halii Kai Unit 8D is an amazing vacation rental property that I property manage with ocean views right off your own private lanai.

So the next time you plan to vacation on the Big Island, be sure to add the Waikoloa area at the top of your “to do” list. Perhaps you may even want to own a piece of paradise for yourself, so you can return time and time again, to relax, refresh, and enjoy.
