The Frank Lloyd Wright of Hawaii – Vladimir Ossipoff

Liljestrand House above Honolulu

Most everyone who appreciates architecture knows Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, and in Hawaii, we had another great man who left his mark on our beautiful islands.

Vladimir Ossipoff has been called “the master of Hawaii Modern architecture,”  “the dean of residential architects in Hawaii,” and “the premier postwar designer of kama’aina-style residences in Honolulu.” Perhaps the most famous of which is the Liljestrand House pictured here.

Ossipoff’s Liljestrand House with views of Honolulu.

Today, on Kauai, you can purchase a home designed by Ossipoff  that is currently listed as an REO for just over $400K (MLS# 235840).  It sits on the rim overlooking the Wailua River Valley on Kauai’s fabulous East Side. The views are incredible from this simple home that need just a bit of TLC.

My husband and I looked at this home a few years ago and thought it was an amazing opportunity at just under $1M. Now I think it’s time to revisit that thought process. What an opportunity to own an Ossipoff  home, on Kauai, overlooking the beautiful Hawaiian lands all the way to Mount Waialeale, the wetest spot in the world. The site on which this simple home was built is very similar to the one picture above at the Lijestrand House.

Ilona is so classy. She knows just how to capture the soul of the properties. She has an artist eye for beauty. She knows just how to present a property without puffery.

I would trust her with my business.

Hi Ilona,
Is this one of your listings? How are you doing? I was at KBC for a week and am coming back 10/9 for 10 days and then 12/30-1/7! I should buy this house and move there 6 months out of the year. Is this home next to yours? Where is it in relation to yours? Does it face the sunset like yours?
Hope all is well!

This is ,as they say, a ‘no-brainer’…the price is literally less than true lot value! The lot’s huge and there’s room for some great add-ons!We have ours already…but there’s room on the rim for some lucky Hawaii lovers!…I have some ideas if anyone wants.Aloha

Aloha Ilona,
Vladimir Ossipoff was one of the great, original talents in the history of 20th century Hawaiian architecture. His work, at its best, relected an ability to synthesize structure with setting in a tasteful and particularly “Hawaiian” way. I am anxious to see this house next time I’m visit Kauai.

Full height window walls and a laid back railing really make this house open and welcoming. Being able to see that much of the outside from the inside gives you a calm and peaceful feeling

This great property has gone under contract, and while I had a client who wrote an offer on it, someone else beat us on price. Lucky Them!
