Tips For Positive Aging

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” – Mark Twain

I will start off by saying that I understand I am not a senior, but helping (and learning from) seniors is something I love to do. There is so much to learn and gain from a senior’s experience and knowledge.

That being said, as a SRES I’d like to share a few helpful tips I learned for positive aging. (Not just for Seniors, this applies to us ALL. Whether we millennials believe it or not, we are also aging).

Activity

Physical Exercise is obviously so very important for your physical and mental health. The Oahu Club in Hawaii Kai offers a ton of exercise programs from Silver Yoga, chair Zumba, to Tai Chi. Both socially distant and responsible in-person classes as well as virtually.

Choice and Independence

No one, no matter what age, appreciates feeling controlled, or as if their rights are being taken away. There is a direct correlation between choice and health. Studies show that independence is one of the top social factors proven to correlate to a longer, better life. Makes sense because who would want to live a life with decisions and choices being made for them?

Social Interactions

“Loneliness is the worst experience a human can have” — Dr. Patch Adams. According to a study done by Brigham Young University, loneliness can be a cause of major health problems. Yes, COVID-19 has definitely made it difficult to do this. Thankfully, we’ve got technology: video chatting, phone calls, texting has definitely helped. Although, not the same as face-to-face communication, it’s helpful! Another fun way to stay in communication is multiplayer games. My grandma and I play “Words with Friends” which is similar to electronic Scrabble, plus a chat box that allows us to “chat” with each other while we play. It’s fun!

Seniors, what are some tips for positive aging you’d like to share?

> Thank you, Carol! Appreciate the feedback 🙂 I am on Oahu. Let me know if there’s a particular island you’d like some info on and I can do some research for you/connect you with an island-specific expert.
