Sustainable Living in Huelo, Maui – Live Off the Land

If you’re looking for a place to live on Maui where you can be self-sustaining, then consider Huelo on the north shore. Here you can grow your own veggies and fruits, raise some animals for meat and eggs, and even harvest rainwater and alternative energy. This part of Maui is very agreeable to living off the land because of ample rainfall and the predominant trade winds. Everything is green and growing and beautiful, and you can garden year-round.

Where is Huelo, Maui?

It’s about a 30 minute drive east of the Kahului airport, along the Hana Highway. Once you pass the 16 mile marker, the Hana Highway King’s Trail begins and the mile markers start at 0 again. This is where Huelo begins and the county water service stops.

The Twin Falls Farm Stand is the popular tourist attraction in the area, just past mile marker 2. You can hike up some easy trails to the pools and waterfalls while enjoying the lush tropical environment. At the Farm Stand, they’ll blend up smoothies and fresh squeezed sugar cane juice while you wait. Stock up on locally grown fruits like bananas, lilikoi, papayas, oranges, and pineapples.
