Okay, I’m sure you’ve all been driving by looking at this sofa for weeks now. This sofa…just sitting by itself on the top of the hill…in the middle of the pasture…just sitting there. And I want to know—who put it there?
I mean, this sofa has to have a story behind it. Once, it was a proud member of the family—a prized possession in the living room, and now, it sits in the wind and the rain in Waikoloa. Why? What happened here?
Camel backed sofa on the top of the hill
Someone had to haul it across the lava field to its present resting place. Think about it…who might have done such a thing? I have my own theory born of many years of driving an Alaskan highway past the Eklutna Indians settlement.
The Eklutna Indians homes were on a hill above the highway, and they had placed two or three sofas along the highway where they would sit and wave at the passing, honking cars. In time, everyone knew to look for them sitting in the sofas, and to honk and wave as you drove by. I think the Eklutna Indians are expanding into a snowbird home—so, I’m going to start honking and waving when I pass the sofa.
Who do you think put the sofa on the hill?
I love the Big Island!
