Why We Love Winter in Lahaina, Maui

There are so many things to love about Makahiki season here (Hawaiian winter from October through March). In Lahaina, it is the season with whales, ideal weather, and the North Swells only a 15-minute drive away. Come along with us on a beautiful Maui winter day!

A typical winter day looking at Mauna Kahalewai — which everyone knows as the “West Maui Mountains”  — with a good view of the new Lahaina Bypass snaking from Lahainaluna on the left of the photo to Olowalu on the right.

Lahaina Harbor. Heading out for a day trip… the view of the harbor never seems to change much. Temperatures in the winter are just perfect in Lahaina — cool enough in the evening to sleep with the windows open with no AC, 65 degrees or so. 82 degrees in the day.

Shot looking toward Lahaina Town…another reason we love Lahaina in the winters: you can sit outside in the evenings in short sleeves and listen to music and eat pupus (appetizers). Fleetwoods is a great place for that.Center of the photo is Fleetwood’s on Front Street… keep it in mind if you’re looking for a place open past “Maui midnight” (9pm)!

Another reason to love the winters here: whale watching. Looking toward the shore with a humpback whale in front. Reports have been that there are fewer and fewer whales, but we saw at least 30 when we were out for a few hours. View of Launiupoko – Kauaula Valley.

As we got in closer to shore, we got a good view of Puamana, looking toward Lahaina. The hills look super dry in this photo… I feel like things are greener than this – maybe it’s my filter.

Can’t resist posting a photo of the stunning Puamana Clubhouse with the oceanfront pool…

A baby whale diving down – that’s Haleakala in the background – rare to see it without clouds.  Winter months typically are less windy than the spring and summer when the trade winds pick up.

Zoe driving the boat…Island of Kahoolawe in the background.

We got in the water and saw a whale swimming below. It is truly amazing to see a mammal that size swim so quietly beneath you… As if a giant 747 airplane was passing by in the night right next to you. Disconcerting but awe-inspiring. And that’s why we love a winter day in Lahaina!
