Living in Spreckelsville on Maui’s North Shore

Spreckelsville

Spreckelsville is a small neighborhood located on Maui’s North Shore between Kahului and Paia. Maui is a windy island and Spreckelsville is one of the best places in the world to windsurf, kitesurf, wingfoil and have fun on all different water crafts. Spreckelsville is the kind of place where men and women age a little slower due to always being so active!  For those that like to stroll the beaches and take a dip in waist deep water, the fabled Baby Beach of Sprecks is the perfect spot to visit and possibly dream of what life would be like to live in Spreckelsville!

I proposed to my wife Liz on this beach as we would always take an evening stroll looking for cowrie shells and seaglass. When we moved to Kula, Liz didn’t bring the shells and seaglass with us, she scattered them back on the beach and in the water for others to find.

My favorite time of year in Sprecks was Halloween! Think of a block party for kids to trick or treat and the residents of Spreckelsville go all out with impressive decorations over their entire front yard! Of course there is tons of candy and treats for all ages. There is also the annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade, which got pretty competitive over the two decades that we lived there, with trophies, lots of creative carts and decorated bikes, and always a huge party afterward. Some of these parties have been legendary! These are some of the most cherished memories that Spreckelsville has provided for my family!

Having Lived in Sprecks for 20 Years

  • I am confident in discussing most of things that come with living there!
  • Homes rarely come up for sale and the prices can vary widely due to the geography (lot size, oceanfront, proximity to Hana Hwy, on the golf course, etc.)

Waipua St. and Ulupua PL

  • Properties are roughly .25 acre lots with home sizes generally above 2,000 sq ft.
  • Price estimates show properties bordering Hana Hwy are a few hundred thousand less than the properties that border the Maui Country Club Golf course.
  • The properties that border the Hwy have a tall wall covered in ivy that creates privacy and greatly dampens road noise.

Makahiki St.

  • Properties are roughly 2-acre lots
  • Zoned Agricultural and can build with proper Maui County building permits, all that follow Ag zoning
  • Except detached ADUs (ohanas) are not allowed in this subdivision.
  • I have many friends who live on this street, and they absolutely love having the space to grow veggies, fruits, palm trees, cultivate honey, and endless possibilities!
  • For those who want the ultimate convenience of easy water access but do not want all that comes with direct oceanfront maintenance, this street is for you.
  • Makahiki properties have a short pathway that links them to the ocean. Spreckelsville’s version of ski in and ski out or paddle in paddle out for watersports!

Nonohe Pl

  • This is the road that links most streets together in Sprecklesville, and lot sizes vary.
  • County zoning is Residential-3 (R-3)
  • Some of these properties border the Maui Country Club golf course.

Paani Pl and Kealakai Pl

  • Oceanfront homes on the Makai (ocean side) of these streets and offer incredibly easy access to the ocean and Maui Country Club! Zoning is R-3.

Laulea Pl

  • Oceanfront homes on the Makai side of the street.
  • Zoned R-3.

E Paepae Ka Pukoa Development / Neighborhood

Old Stable Rd.

  • Closest to the airport.
  • Direct ocean access in their backyards to the Upper Kanaha area.
  • Upper Kanaha is very shallow with a few channels to make it out into the deep blue ocean and wave ride back into the shallows.
  • Fun fact, I used to follow my good friend as safety while he would attempt double forward loops windsurfing!

The Spreckelsville area does fall into a Special Management Area and most building projects would require a SMA permit. It is important to note that property zoning allowing for certain uses and structures to be built may conflict with subdivision rules and Homeowners Association (HOA) laws.  Before buying any property due diligence is advised. Also, working with a licensed contractor is always a good idea, and remember, the best ones are generally booked a fair amount out in advance but are busy for a reason. The pool below was built by Pool Pro Maui.

Worth the wait for a good contractor and the SMA Permitting process!

Maui Boogie Boarding

With beaches like this, a pool is optional!

Feel free to reach out to me. I’m here for any questions. If I do not know the answer, I probably know someone who does.

Aloha,

Matt
