While all sides of the island of Kauai offer something unique and special, the non-motorized pedestrian bike path is currently exclusive only to the East Side. Spanning just under 7 miles down the coastline of Kapaa is the Ke Ala Hele Makalae, which translates to the path that goes by the coast.

Partially built on a rail line that once was used to haul sugarcane crop, the multi-use path will eventually stretch for 17 miles from Nawiliwili to Anahola, preserving the coastal corridor for the enjoyment of both residents and tourists alike to experience.
Currently, there are two disconnected segments of the 6-phased development project complete. The third is underway which will ultimately connect the existing 2 paths which extend from the southern end of Lydgate Park to the northern end of Ahihi Point (Donkey Beach). While the remaining phases of the path may take years to complete, the project has strong support both from the community and the local government.

The trail gives access to parks, beaches, and the coastal communities, along with nearly 2 dozen interpretive signs that offer information about local archeological, cultural and historical sites, the native names of streams and canals, the plants and animals that can be seen here (including whales and monk seals), and many more topics unique to the area.

My personal favorite is the most northern 2 miles, which rides along the edge of the Pacific Ocean and is graced with beautifully undeveloped natural landscape. Headed back south, you can find yourself in the heart of Kapaa town, with direct access to some of the best food on the island. If you are out in the morning, ride over to Java Kai for one of their killer coffee drinks. If on an evening cruise, swing into Sam’s Ocean View for one of their craft cocktails in their open-air dining room.
The beauty of living in a small community is the ability to stay connected and have easy access to all your daily needs and wants.
