KAUAI | 5 Things to Love About Koloa Town

Located on the south shore of Kauai, Koloa is a quaint town with a rich history, offering an incredible quality of life to its residents and visitors alike. With the ocean just a short drive away, the lush backdrop of the mountains, and convenient amenities, Koloa’s location is hard to beat. Here are just a few of the advantages of living in Koloa Town:

The Beach

Kiahuna Beach

A major benefit of Koloa is its proximity to the ocean. With Poipu Beach just 3 miles away, you can easily (and quickly) spend a day lounging on the sand and swimming in the ocean. Or, check out any other of the excellent Poipu sandy beaches, such as Shipwrecks, Kiahuna Beach, Kukuiula Harbor, or Mahaulepu. Poipu also offers several surf breaks as well as snorkeling and scuba diving options.

Climate

Māhāʻulepū Beach

Buffered by a southeast mountain range, the south shore is known for its drier, sunny weather that attracts visitors from all over the world. Koloa enjoys an average of 271 days of sunshine per year, providing plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities and beach-going. Additionally, the trade winds provide a refreshing breeze and help to keep humidity levels comfortable. Even during the winter months, when temperatures are slightly cooler, Koloa still enjoys plenty of sunshine with average temperature ranging from the mid-70s to low-80s Fahrenheit, making it an ideal destination to escape colder climates.

Amenities

Koloa Town

Koloa Town has a variety of shops, restaurants, and grocery stores, making it easy to find everything you need close to home.

The latest development to the scene is the recently completed Koloa Village, which is host to the new Kauai Juice Co. space, Hoku Foods, offering a wide array of organic food options, and Smart Fit, a boutique personal science-based training space.

When it comes to local restaurants, Koloa has no shortage of options. Whether you’re looking for a casual lunch spot or a fine dining experience, there’s something for everyone’s taste buds and wallet. Some local favorites include Da Crack, a popular spot for Mexican food, Koloa Fish Market, offering local-style plate lunches, and Dark Horse Coffee Roasters for those looking for their caffeine fix. For a more upscale experience, try The Tasting Room, which offers delicious Italian food excellently paired with wines, cocktails, or mocktails.

Community

Another advantage of living in Koloa is the sense of community and the abundance of annual town events, such as the Koloa Plantation Days celebration, a ten-day event that takes place every July and celebrates the town’s history as a sugarcane plantation.

Koloa is a town that values its cultural heritage. One of the best ways to experience this is through the annual Bon Dance, hosted at the Koloa Jodo Mission, a Buddhist temple in town. This festival is a Japanese Buddhist tradition that takes place every summer and features traditional music played on taiko drums as well as a variety of dance performances.

There are multiple running events throughout the year, including the Kauai Marathon, featuring a beautiful course that takes runners and walkers through scenic Poipu and Koloa.

History

Koloa Town has a rich history spanning from ancient Hawaii to the more recent sugar plantation industry, starting in the early 19th century.

Makauwahi Cave

The area is home to several important archaeological and paleoecological sites, including Makauwahi Cave, one of the most important fossil sites in the Hawaii islands and home to numerous petroglyphs (rock carvings) that offer insights into the religious and cultural practices of the ancient Hawaiian people.

The Koloa Sugar Mill

In the 1800s, sugar cane was introduced to the island of Kauai, and Koloa became the site of the first successful sugar plantation, operating from 1835 – 1996. While the Old Koloa Sugar Mill is now silent, its legacy lives on through the town’s historic plantation-era buildings and landmarks.
