Kapaa Listed as One of the 18 Most Underrated Cities by Huffington Post

In a recent article, the Huffington Post included Kapaa as one of the 18 most underrated cities in the United States. This is a list of some fabulous places that are often overlooked by the travel media, compiled by the people at Global Yodel.

What Makes Kapaa So Great?

Kapaa is a charming town on the east side of Kauai, with a population of a little over 10,000. Kapaa offers beautiful beaches, shopping, hiking, golf, and restaurants. There are many vacation destination locations in Kapaa, including the luxurious Waipouli Beach Resort.

Waipouli-Beach-Resort

Waipouli Beach Resort is located right in Kapaa, and is a beautiful place to stay if you are coming to visit. The condos here are very luxurious, and amenities include a 2-acre pool, a spa, a restaurant where you can dine right by the ocean, and a sweet beach.

Many people prefer Kapaa as a vacation destination, as well as a permanent home, because of its small-town charm and central location. It is easy to get from Kapaa to either the north or south shores of Kauai, depending on one’s mood and the weather.

This is a shot from the bike path, called “Ke Ala Hele Makalae” (the path that goes by the coast), north of Kealia Beach. This is a beautiful place to walk, run, bike, or skate.

Kapaa has many different settings, including condos and homes by the ocean, homes and condos in and near the downtown area, and a variety of country settings where homes are nestled amongst hills, trees and pastures.

There are several great beaches in and near Kapaa. Lydgate Beach Park is located at the south end of town and has man-made swimming areas that offer shelter from the surf.

Kealia Beach is located just north of town, and is a long beach popular with swimmers, boogie boarders, and surfers. Both the Lydgate and Kealia beaches have lifeguards. Another great beach is Kalapaki Bay, located in front of the Kauai Marriott Resort, just a quick 10 to 15 minute drive from Kapaa.

Waipouli Beach Resort has a sweet, cozy beach that is usually very quiet and peaceful.

Kealia beach is a long beach. The best area to swim is at the north end where it is somewhat sheltered from the surf. (It is also a good idea to check with the lifeguards and they will advise you of the conditions that day). This shot was taken from the path, “Ke Ala Hele Makalae.”

Kalapaki Bay

Kalapaki Bay is a beautiful, serene location, located directly in front of the Kauai Marriott Resort. It is a popular spot for swimming, stand up paddle boarding, volleyball, and just relaxing. There are also several restaurants and shops nearby.

If you are on Kauai for the first Saturday of the month, the Kapaa Art Walk is a fun and lively event. During the evening, artists and other vendors set up booths along the streets in Kapaa town, most of the shops are open, and there is lots of food and music. It starts around 5 pm, and usually by 7 pm it gets very busy.
