How to Fly to Hawaii for Cheap

I can’t tell you the amount of money I have spent on flights to and from Hawaii. I could probably take a year or two off and hit the hammock on the beach if I had saved that money instead. But flying to Hawaii is part of the game when you decide to live in paradise. Over the years, I have found a couple ways to fly to Hawaii cheap for both my wife and me.

Airline Mileage Credit Cards

There are several airline mileage credit cards out there and all of them have a point system that you can use to gain cheap or free flights to Hawaii. Growing up in northwest Montana, one of the main airlines with the best prices was Alaska Airlines. They have a credit card that gives you points for each dollar you spend. I have always charged everything that I needed every day, such as gas and food, and then pay the card off at the end of the month. No interest is charged, and the points begin to stack up.

Alaska Airlines

Another thing Alaska Airlines has that helps us fly to Hawaii cheap is what they call a companion fare ticket. It used to be that I could buy my airline ticket, and then my wife could fly for $99 plus tax. I noticed lately that they have waived the $99, and all you have to pay is the tax (about $20) when you sign up now. Having the airline card also gives each of us a free bag to check to help keep it cheap. As a bonus, when you sign up they usually throw in enough points for your first round trip ticket.

Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines is the other card I use. They have a similar program along with a companion ticket. We each have a card for each of these companies and can use the points we earn along with four separate companion fare tickets (one per year, per card). The great thing about this is we can use them for flying friends and family out to the Island as well. It really helps keep the costs down.

There are several other cards out there with mileage. All of them that I know of charge a fee each year. The ones I use have fees around $75-$85 per year. When you want to fly to Hawaii cheap, this helps keep the costs down. Check around and see what card works best for your needs. Different airlines fly to different locations. Alaska doesn’t fly into Hilo yet. Hawaiian does. Make sure the airline you choose flies where you need to go. Pay off the card monthly to keep the interest fees out of the picture and always charge responsibly. Buckle up and we hope to see you soon.
