Last week, the Hawai‘i Life Charitable Fund board and I recently traveled to O‘ahu to meet with Robin Pratt and Malia Peters, two amazing members of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation team.
We gathered at their headquarters in the historic C. Brewer & Co. Building, a beautifully restored space in downtown Honolulu to collaborate on how we can better serve our local communities and involve more people in our mission. During our visit, we also learned about the rich history of the building from Nella Kauwenaole the Guest Services Coordinator and were especially moved by the collaborative artwork in the front entry created by Sig Zane, which honors Hawai‘i’s culture and stories. It was an inspiring day of connection, learning, and shared purpose.

The front entry mural was a collaborative effort led by Sig Zane and his team, created as part of the building’s renovation to honor Hawai‘i’s history, values, and the spirit of community. Using the makawalu process—drawing on multiple perspectives—HCF staff contributed personal insights that helped shape the mural’s themes. At its center is the Ti leaf, a Hawaiian symbol of protection and strength, reflecting HCF’s role as a guardian for nonprofits and communities. The mural invites reflection, connection, and a sense of purpose for all who enter.
