The Bite is Back!
The bite is back and coming on strong this season. A lot of fish are being caught and big weights are being reported. Already weighing in are a 74 lb. Sailfish and an 83 lb. Ono. These fish weights are already higher than last year’s numbers, and it’s only March!
Countless Mahi Mahi are being landed along with Ahi, and not quite a grander (1000+ lbs.), but a 917 lb. Blue Marlin caught on the “Bite Me” boat. This is one of the largest Blue Marlin reported from the numerous Blue Marlin catches.
My husband and I went out last week and we landed two Ono – a 17lb and 25lb – and one 28lb Mahi Mahi. One Mahi Mahi jumped in front of the boat and came around the back of the boat and bit our lure, but the hook didn’t set. So, one loss. Shucks, the moment of excitement was surreal.
We even saw 3 Humpback whales fully breach out of the water. Manta rays and dolphins that we usually encounter, we also saw this day. It was a great day at sea for us and we felt blessed! Many of our friends caught and broke the long dry spell since last season. Everyone left Honokohau Harbor with smiles on their face and fish in their coolers. Big Island living, mo betta (more better). Stay tuned for my next fish update.
