What are the Hapuna Beach Residences at the Mauna Kea Beach Resort?
Perhaps it would be worthwhile to back up for a moment and start with the WHERE before the WHAT.
The Mauna Kea Resort — and the homes within it — have access to the amenities of two hotels: Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, and the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. Guests driving to the resort for the first time are sometimes confused that the entrance to the Hapuna side of the resort is on the mauka side of Highway 19, Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway – away from the ocean, not makai or towards it. However the entrance road swings back under the highway. Many of the residential communities are located in the Uplands, offering sweeping coastline views: Waiʻulaʻula, Kumulani, Moani Heights, and the beautiful new homes at the ʻAmaui Villas (the final 5 residences of Phase III are now for sale).
On the ocean side of the highway, the only oceanfront property historically was The Bluffs. Not every owner of a second/vacation home property wants or needs a single-family home and all its attendant maintenance requirements (although there are property managers who can and will make this job easy for you). Given the substantial demand for a lock-and-go condominium, in easy proximity to hotel and larger resort amenities, and with the option to earn income renting when the owner is not in residence, and limited availability of undeveloped oceanfront within the Mauna Kea resort, the decision was made to convert the building housing the suites at the Hapuna Beach hotel into condominiums. Hapuna Beach Residences A25 is one of only two units currently for sale in the community. At 2 bedrooms, 2 baths with a bonus room that can serve as an office or guest room, this 1,646 sq ft condominium is large enough to comfortably accommodate a snowbird lifestyle, or a family on vacation…especially when you can spill out onto the 66 sq ft of lanai.
One thing that I appreciate when I am staycationing in a vacation rental is a real kitchen. The developers of Hapuna Beach Residences understood that much as we love the Mauna Kea and Hapuna hotel restaurants (and anyone who knows me will vouch for my devotion), for a stay of any length I am going to want to stock up at the Saturday Farmers Markets in nearby Waimea, fill up that wine fridge at Alvinʻs or the new wine shop in Waikoloa Village or even (gasp) Costco, and enjoy leisurely meals at “home.”
If on the other hand, for a $7 million price point you prefer a single family home at Mauna Kea Resort, there are currently a couple of listings under $8 million at the nearby Kaunaoa community, and one on the “other side” in Mauna Kea Fairways North. Of course none of these are going to give you that feeling of being right on the beach, which is the true value of the Hapuna Beach Residences.
