Haena Oceanfront Compound: Nearly Three Acres at Tunnels Beach

I’ve been fortunate to represent many properties in Hāʻena over the years, and every one reminds me why this place stays with people. Buyers don’t come here looking for a bigger house. They come because they want to live in Hāʻena.

At the end of the north-shore road, the pace changes. The mountains rise straight from the coast, so close and so green that after a hard rain, when the cliffs run with waterfalls, the view can feel like standing inside one. The reef reaches almost to the sand, and the ocean becomes part of daily life. This is a place where you spend more time outside than in, where a morning swim or a walk down the beach is routine rather than something you plan.

What makes this property so uncommon isn’t simply that it’s oceanfront. It’s the completeness of the estate.

Nearly three acres extend from Kūhiō Highway to the sand at Tunnels Beach, across two individually deeded parcels offered as one. It includes approximately 250 feet of beachfront, broad lawns, mature gardens, a tennis court, a sheltered cove, and two complete residences, brought together as one estate. That much land gives it room to breathe, hard to find this close to the sand on the North Shore.

One of the things I appreciate most is how naturally it fits the way people actually live here.

The principal residence sits right at the water, and it’s the one that tends to stop people. It was built as a circle, so almost every room opens to its own lānai and its own piece of the view. Walls of glass bring the ocean into the living spaces, and there’s warm teak throughout, in the doors, the columns, and the cabinetry. It’s light, open, and always connected to the water. You arrive facing the mountains, and you live facing the sea.

The second residence stands back among the palms, closer to the mountains. It’s a plantation-style home wrapped by a covered lānai, separate from the principal residence but never apart from the estate. It’s every bit a complete home, not a guest cottage. That changes how the property lives.

The grounds matter just as much as the homes. Open lawn runs uninterrupted to the beach. A screened pavilion sits just above the sand. The tennis court is framed by gardens with the mountains rising behind it. Spend an active day in Hāʻena, or simply sit and watch the light move across the reef and the peaks of Bali Hai.

That’s what makes this a true compound. It’s more than two residences. It’s the way the land, the homes, and the grounds work together as one estate. You can have everyone here without ever feeling crowded, with room to spread out, gather together, or disappear for a while. It works just as well for a quiet week as it does for entertaining a crowd.

One of the things I enjoy most about this stretch of coastline is how much of life naturally revolves around the water. Through the summer the protected water is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and paddling straight off the sand. In winter the outer reef comes alive with the swells that have made this coast famous with surfers around the world. The setting shifts with the seasons, and there’s no wrong time to be here.

The principal residence has been fully renovated in recent years. The work respected the original architecture while updating the home for today’s lifestyle. Both residences carry solar and Tesla Powerwall battery storage, and both are complete and ready to live in.

Anyone who knows Hāʻena will tell you the best properties are the ones that encourage you to spend your time outside. That’s certainly true here. The homes are beautifully done, and they’re designed to live with the land, inside and out. Rooms open to lānai, the ocean and the mountains stay in view, and there’s never much between you and the outdoors. Days here begin or end at the beach, on the lawn, under the pavilion, or simply watching the light change across the water and the mountains. That’s what makes Hāʻena different, and this estate captures that feeling exceptionally well.

I’ve always believed people come to Hāʻena because they want to live here. Opportunities to own an estate like this, nearly three acres, two deeded parcels, and this much beachfront, have become increasingly rare. I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent it, and I look forward to sharing it with its next owner.

If you’d like to learn more about Hāʻena Oceanfront Compound or arrange a private showing, I’d be glad to show it to you.
