We’ve all heard that Kauai is known as the “Garden Island.” What isn’t as well known is that it is home to 3 of the 5 National Tropical Botanical Gardens. 68% of our known plant species on earth are threatened with extinction, and the Botanical Gardens work to preserve these plants.
Kauai Botanical Gardens
McBryde Garden was the first of the five gardens and was purchased in 1970. It is in the Lawai Valley on the south side of Kauai. It was originally a sugarcane plantation owned by the McBryde Family. Now it serves as a research and conservation garden. Allerton Garden is next door and is a favorite spot for Hollywood producers and was named one of the “50 places of a Lifetime” to visit by National Geographic Traveler.
The North Shore is home to Limahuli Gardens, which is located in one of the most biodiverse valleys in the Hawaiian Islands. It is an easily accessible preserve with intact archaeological complexes set in a gorgeous native forest.

The two gardens that are not on Kauai are The Kampong in Coconut Grove, Florida, and Kahanu, which is found on Maui.
