Day Trip To Pohoiki Boat Ramp & Isaac Hale Beach Park

One of the best things about living here on Hawai’i island is when old friends come to visit. It is a great opportunity to rediscover the magic of this beautiful place through the eyes of someone who has never seen it before. Recently, my good friend Meagan made the long trip from Maine, and we were both able to experience the new black sand beach at the Pohoiki boat ramp at the Isaac Hale Beach Park.

In May of 2018, the island of Hawai’i experienced an incredibly devastating lava flow that lasted for over three months. Countless homes were destroyed as people all over the world watched from their televisions in disbelief. Even though I live on the island, I didn’t have any more information than people on the mainland. Many people set up social media pages to keep people informed and to connect those in need with people who were able to help. There was one area in particular that kept popping up on my newsfeed, Isaac Hale Beach Park and the Pohoiki boat ramp. So many people posted about how they hoped that the Pohoiki boat ramp and the little red house the Isaac Hale would be spared. After several days of watching and waiting, the lava flow stopped, and people began to start picking up the pieces of what was left of life as they once knew it. It took several months before the state reopened the park.
