A Birdseye View of the Active Lava Flow

A few weeks into the active lava flow on the Big Island, my husband and I decided to take one of the helicopter flights over the active flow. Like many people, we had been volunteering and donating when we could. We had known about the scope of the flow, but it was difficult to grasp.

We met several people that shared their stories; many did not know if they would have a home to return to, and some were already making plans as they knew their home was already gone. There really are no words to describe the gamut of thoughts and emotions that ran through my mind when we passed over the flow. Sadness for the families that were forced to evacuate with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. Amazement and awe at the beauty of new land being created but above all the realization of how small we really are. These are a few of the photos and videos that I took.

If you would like more information about how you can help the people who are still in need please feel free to reach out to me via email or if a monetary donation is something that speaks to your heart, please consider donating to the Hawai’i Life Charitable Fund.
