Big Island Horse Properties for Sale

There is no easy way to search the MLS for horse properties for sale on the Big Island of Hawai’i. I have at least written before about each of the equestrian communities with some level of facilities for horse owners, so one could start with listings at Waikii Ranch or Puu Lani Ranch. But more likely youʻll end up looking at individual homes for sale on acreage with a barn or arena.

Here is a sampling of Hawaii Island horse-friendly properties listed for sale in August 2017:

Waikii Ranch Homes for Sale

As Iʻve written before, the only real equestrian community on the Big Island is the gated Waikii Ranch, which its arenas, polo field, and riding trails. The lot sizes range from 10 to 40 acres, so individual owners build barns and sometimes complementary facilities.

My favorite Waikii Ranch home for sale has a main house, a guest house, 6 bedrooms and 8,693 sq.ft. for the human residents, plus a barn with caretaker quarters and fenced paddocks on 20 acres, listed for $2,995,000 (MLS 697373).

Waimea (Kamuela) Horse Property for Sale

A little lower in elevation than Waikii Ranch, Waimea (Kamuela) is home to Parker Ranch and used to be the kind of place where people rode their horses right into town.

This Waimea property features a home, horse barn and riding arena for $1,395,000

Lot size tends to be more modest in Waimea proper than at nearby Waikii Ranch.  A currently listed horse property on 5 acres with a simple 2 bed/2 bath 1,746 sq.ft. home, 3-stall barn and arena is asking $1,395,000 (MLS 606923). As the aerial shows, you have acreage almost right in town!

Hamakua Coast Horse Property for Sale

The Hamakua Coast features ocean views and lush green pastures for your horses to graze.

If your budget is under $1 million, consider this horse property on the Hamakua Coast, with ocean views from the 3 bed/2 bath 2,015 sq.ft. home. It also features a 3-stall barn and 5 acres of pasture, listed for $895,000 (MLS 607800). Only five minutes from Honokaa town, it is close to the County arena at Honoka’a if you want to participate in weekly roping practice or the annual rodeo.

Barn, arena, 23 acres which are farmed as well as serving as pasture… listed for $1,325,000.

Continuing east along the Hamakua Coast, a bit closer to Hilo (10 minutes from town), a more extensive off-grid horse and farm property is listed for sale for $1,325,000 (MLS 297549).  The 4 bedroom 2,810 sq.ft. house, barn and arena are built at the top of the property, leaving the lower acreage available for farming. The property also has ocean views and a waterfall and pond!

Properties with a waterfall are another item on many wish lists for homes in tropical Hawaiʻi.

North Kohala Horse Property for Sale

The gated Puakea Bay Ranch community near Hawi has big ocean views, 10 acre lots, and strict CC&Rs.

The Puakea Bay Ranch community has riding trails around its perimeter, but only one home was built on multiple 10-acre lots with actual equestrian facilities.  Currently listed with only 20 acres (the same owner has two adjacent lots which are fenced and used as pasture), the luxury horse property has a three bedroom main house, two bedroom guest house, expansive covered lanai, swimming pool, and a six bedroom (I mean stall) barn, plus arena and round pen. Asking price $2,695,000 (MLS 607035).

Kailua Kona Horse Property for Sale

Near Kona town, this 5-acre equestrian estate just had a $1 million price reduction!

It is harder to find homes on acreage with equestrian features near Kailua Kona. A currently listed property has a newer (built in 2000) 3 bedroom home with an old ranch feel, ocean view swimming pool, a barn, arena and 5 acres, all recently reduced to $2,900,000 (MLS 602778).
