Best Oahu Neighborhoods Pt 3: Portlock, Triangle, and Koko Kai

Located in East O’ahu, just across Kalaniana’ole Hwy from Hawaii Kai Marina and on the western slope of Koko Head, you’ll find one of the most desirable areas to live on O’ahu. This quiet area, with wide, aesthetically pleasing and gentle sloping streets, consists of three small neighborhoods: Portlock, Triangle and Koko Kai. Often located on very sizable lots, homes were originally built during the 1940s-1970s. However, many of those homes have either been completely remodeled, or torn down and replaced with homes of much larger square footage. If looking for a dream home in Hawaii, here is a great place to start, and finish your search.

Koko Kai Current Listings

Koko Kai is located at the southern end of this area and consists of about 130 single family homes. Serene and beautiful is how I would describe this area. If you are looking to own a luxurious home in a quiet community but also conveniently located to shops and restaurants, I highly recommend Koko Kai. And if you choose to live along the rocky coastline, you will be treated to some of the most dramatic and awe inspiring views on the island. On a big swell day, the waves crashing against the coastline is a thrill to watch. You also have a chance of seeing whales or dolphins from your home. Here are some homes currently on the market:

Triangle Current Listings

Set back from the ocean, the triangle neighborhood consists of about 300 single family homes with values generally ranging between $1.5MM and $3MM. Some of the best views in all of East O’ahu can be had from homes located on Polihale Place. Not all homes in Triangle neighborhood offer ocean views, but those that don’t, still often offer beautiful views of the mountains and bluffs.

Portlock Current Listings

For years, with the tranquil views of Maunalua Bay and Diamond Head, Portlock has been one of the most desirable areas to live on Oahu. Henry Kaiser, the extraordinary man whose vision led to the development of Hawaii Kai Marina and surrounding neighborhoods chose Portlock for his O’ahu residence.

This neighborhood consists of about 120 single family homes (about 40 of them are oceanfront). If you decide not to live directly on the ocean here, no worries, there are a handful of public access paths that allow you ocean access. At these entry points, water is shallow and often calm and commonly used by surfers, kayakers and SUPs.
