Yes, I still surf, and nearly every day. I love to go diving too! Keeps my head screwed on straight in that crazy world out there somewhere (not here)…Ahhhh to get in the ocean. It is amazingly warm. Silky ocean water teaming with fish. I went for a swim just before sunset yesterday.
I had worked on the computer for hours, my friend called, and off we went…she and I came around a reef outcropping, and there we were face-to-face with 9 of the biggest balloon fish we have seen! All about 2 feet long. So prehistoric looking, and since my friend had just found someone else’s spear on the bottom, which I picked up, I felt these guys were more scared of me than normal! I don’t usually spear fish.
First balloon fish, and then sleeping turtles. Wow! This spot has more turtles than anywhere I know! They are bigger than say…a trash can lid (sorry, that’s all I could think of), and 2 were actually sleeping on a sandy bottom under a ledge about 20 feet down. They stayed down there sleeping motionless on the bottom the whole 15 minutes we were snooping around them, and I turned around and bumped right into one swimming!
He looked at me with that curious turtle expression. I was temped to reach out and take a ride on his back, but my girlfriend is a Hawaiian lifeguard all day at the beaches. “Joy” yep, shes a Joy too, and even though we were underwater I could hear her voice telling tourists not to touch them (that is the law) so…I behaved and followed this turtle, and he took me over to an even larger one, and we all swam together looking at each other.
Wow, it was awesome! It was now well after 6 pm and the bright sun was low on the horizon, so we headed back to where we got in just in time to sit on the beach and watch a glorious sunset! Wheew! I really felt like pinching myself! It is a mind blower to live here for sure!
Check this out—this house is only a short walk from where we were. Oceanfront Kona at Kahalu’u! What a great property from which to enjoy this lifestyle! Take a look.
Anyone ready for YOUR Hawaii Life? The clock is ticking! These are precious moments…every day!

What a great dive Heidi. It seems more often than not when I get in the water I always say “Why don’t I do this everyday?” I know that’s how you live. Now, if I lived at this house you mentioned there would be no excuse not be in the water everyday. Perhaps that is the solution.
Wow Heidi! What a great little piece of Hawaiiana. This property takes me back to the old days of Kona; a terrific little “Plantation Style” home; no wonder it rents out easily. Who wouldn’t want to vacation at a spot like that? Don’t have to worry about driving to the beach when you own this house.
Erik – perhaps you and I should buy the house together and move there TOMORROW!!!!
Heidi, what a beautiful life! I can’t wait to spend time with you in the water in Kona on a weekly basis next year!! Woo Hoo!
I know! Right!! You know, Erik, Kathy and Katie. I have rented this house 4 different years for 1 week over thanksgiving (thats my birthday too) and it is the most fun my family has all year! Sorry to say we do not have it booked this year but I surely wish we did. It is truly a dream to stay there. Dives are great and simply watching the turtles from a chair on the lanai is a dream come true! Not to mention surf and this year the full moon sets on the horizon in the mornings with a mug of kona coffee…Life does not get much better! :o) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
You go girl surfing, diving, living the life.
Makes me wanna go jump in right now! You really painted a vivid picture here, Heidi! Thank you for sharing this! I tried living and being ‘land-locked’ for a few years after high school and needless to say I came HOME asap!!!!!!!! Mahalo Nui Loa!!
