What Surfing & Real Estate Have in Common

Surfing is an adrenaline rush unlike any other, just you and a wave. There’s a sense of freedom you cannot fully appreciate until you’re standing on that board with the ocean propelling you forward to the white sandy shore. I know what it’s like to wake at the crack of dawn, chomping at the bit to hit the waves, racing down to the beach to catch a quick shore break session that’s bound to make you the happiest person in the world, if even for just a few minutes or hours.

Born and raised on Oahu – and being native Hawaiian – the ocean is my second home. I grew up surfing everywhere from the treacherous shoreline of Sandy Beach to the mellower south side swells of Waikiki, free diving Waimanalo Bay, hiking to Kokohead and Makapu’u Lighthouse, paddling out to Rabbit Island, and a lot of places in between.

Watersports like surfing are such a natural part of life to me that I became an Ocean Safety Lifeguard with the City and County of Honolulu Emergency Services. When I’m not helping people buy or sell beachfront real estate, you can find me at Sandy Beach, Hanauma Bay, or other east side beaches, working as a lifeguard, helping beachgoers stay safe.

Surfing Is A Lot Like Selling Real Estate

A good surfer, like a good real estate agent, knows their environment. They know whether the waves break to the left or the right, how the wave sets and directions differ in size between the summer and winter, and what rock formations and other hazards lay beneath the waterline. It’s that ability to read the ocean, to know which way the wave will break, and whether the timing is right to hop up and catch the wave that makes good surfing look easy.

As a lifeguard, I always tell folks, “look before you leap” – the same can be said about buying your first home. It’s always a good idea to seek a local professional who is knowledgeable to that area (or areas) to find the best possible location and house for your needs and budget. Having spent my entire life on these islands, I know first-hand how communities have grown over time and the special features that make each community and neighborhood unique. And like catching a good wave, I love helping people find the home that best suits their needs and budget.
