Waimea’s Anuenue Playground is Waimea’s Landmark

Anuenue Means Rainbow

There couldn’t be a better name for our town center’s playground than Anuenue! As I’ve mentioned in a few of my previous blogs – Where I Live, There are Rainbows – that is no joke! Waimea town is where the green and dry areas of South Kohala meet, and that means we experience glorious rainbows all the time.

Anuenue Playground is the Heart of Waimea Town

Living on the Big Island in Waimea is special for lots of different reasons. It’s a great place to raise kids – beautiful scenery, nice neighborhoods with excellent educational opportunities nearby. You will also find that real estate inventory tends to be limited, especially in the heart of Waimea town.

Speaking of the in-town location, the Waimea Parkside neighborhood is in one of the most desirable Waimea locations, just across the street from Anuenue playground and Waimea park. Walking distance to town center and farmers’ markets, Waimea Parkside is a community of new plantation style homes constructed with high quality and modern designs offering a sense of place and timeless charm.

Anuenue Playground – Just Across the Street

Originally built in 1992, Anuenue Playground is a project of the non-profit Friends of the Future. In the recent years this popular and much beloved playground was in need of repair, and with community support, Friends of Anuenue Playground was formed to address the primary concerns. The community response was amazing! Friends of the Future raised $400,000, and over 600 community members volunteered their time and skills to repair maintenance issues and bring the playground up to current codes. The project was completed in October 2017 and Hawaii County has now taken over the maintenance of the park. If the repairs had not been made, the playground would have been permanently closed.
