Design Snobs Rejoice: Wailea Modern is Becoming a Reality

Makali’i at Wailea

“Where Life Takes Flight” reads the brochure for Makali’i – Wailea’s newest and most delightfully surprising architectural prodigy. “Where architecture takes flight” might be more appropriate – since the vision for this new community takes a bold leap from the tedium of bland and safe Wailea status quo. There is, however, nothing unsafe about the aesthetics of this venture, since there is a world hungry for good design, and every choice that has been made in this project has nothing to do with design elitism and everything to do with comfort, style, and beauty.

Mid Century Modern in Wailea?

Yes and no. The mid century modern movement was not in the business of “trying to be cool” but was an attempt to re-imagine how we like to live and to allow the design process to leverage the period’s technological advances in order to woo us into more comfortable lives. Light, space, open-ness, movement, ergonomic flow, air. When all we had was mud, we made mud huts. Now that we have steel, glass, stone, and wood, we do not need to design for a mud hut.

The design philosophy of Makali’i is both radical and obvious: Create living spaces that truly embrace the benefits of our Hawaiian climate, and forgo geographically irrelevant architectural leanings in favor of a smarter, wiser more Hawaiian solution.

Makali’i sits directly above the Fairmont Kea Lani hotel right as Wailea graduates into Makena – a superb sunny hillside location. A mere 17 buildings are offered with 68 units total (four townhouses per building) and one of the sweetest sunset view locations has been reserved for the pool and recreation center available for all guests to enjoy. (Sauna and steam rooms too!)

Pricing starts at just over $1,000,000 and tops out at roughly $2,300,000 depending on location and view. Art and style are honored not only in the architecture and vision for the property but word is that Honolulu born Artist Satoru Abe’s art will be at the entry water feature.

This welcome addition to our island is being sold by The Wailea Group LLC brokerage. Please reach out to me if you would like to book a site visit.
