Vintage Maui House – A Preservationist’s Dream

Like Esteemed Literature Brought into Form

It’s not often you enter a house and feel instantly altered. Such is the case with this impeccably maintained and preserved example of early Maui architecture. If grandeur could be packaged in such a way as to not intimidate, and elegance could be wrought into a house without making you feel stuffy, nor pretentious, then the designer of all this would easily be considered an alchemist, or a wizard. Cherie Attix then has a magic wand for this is her house and this is the place that she has lovingly stewarded for decades — diligently repairing, adding, modernizing — yet never ignoring the strong call of the soul of the original house.  The result is literature brought into form — a collection of walls that exude story, laughter, solitude, peace.

Aged Bokeh in the Windows

Bokeh is the charming artifact brought to a photographic image by a lens with a short focal length — the gauzy blurry background of a professional photographer’s portrait. Each of the windows in this house creates its own bokeh — manufactured in a time when glass was likely hand-poured into sheets, the windows have a watery ripple that causes all the garden’s magnificent colors to land in your eye with a vintage softness.

Hallways and Hallways and Rooms and Rooms!

I’ve never understood when people tell me they don’t like hallways. What?? Hallways create journeys — privacy — why they’re veritable instruments of cloistering! This house does not disappoint the hallway lover. Two major hallways flank either side of the main central living area. One one side, a hallway is the path to 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. On the kitchen side, another long hallway takes us to 2 more bedrooms. Five bedrooms, a large family style kitchen, and elegant public spaces, lanais. A brilliant floor plan. Those hallways also have beautifully tall ceilings and are flowing with natural light. Great places to display art and artifacts.

Video Walk Through

I think I’ve done enough talking. Take a look and listen to this video — prepared without any music or added effects – to give you a sense of the real air and sound of the house.
