Tips for Island Hopping: Hawaii Edition

When you’re in Hawaii, take advantage of the affordable flights, three day weekends and explore ALL of Hawaii. People often describe the Hawaiian islands and their fascinating differences. It is recommended you visit multiple islands to have an authentic experience of this magical paradise. After my island hopping experience, I would repeat the sentiment. There is something unique and intriguing about each island. Did you know it snows in Hawaii? As you prepare for your trip and select which island to venture to first, let me share a few tips I believe are universal. With the tips below, you can enhance your vacation or staycation.

Be Flexible

Having a schedule is really just a suggestion. Choose a few activities and adventures but do not pack your calendar. While I was driving along the road to the Waimea Canyon Trail, there were so many beautiful areas to explore. Leave room to safely pull over, enjoy the view, have an impromptu lunch or snack. Rigidity on vacation can negate the opportunity for a natural adventure. For example, I spent my birthday in Wailea, Maui. I followed a beach sign and stumbled onto a small secluded beach. I was able to celebrate my life watching the most beautiful sunset ever. This stop wasn’t on my agenda but I can not imagine my day without it.

Pack for Varying Weather and Activities

Light packing for island hopping I’d recommend, slippers/sandals, sneakers, a hat, warmer shirt/pants, waterproof jacket and of course a swimsuit. Generally Hawaii is full of “sunshine and rainbows,” but there are rainy, windy, and cooler moments. You may be in the mountains one day and the beach the next day. Keep a change of clothes or shoes accessible. You will want to go on at least one hike or I would highly recommend you do so.  The climate is unpredictable and can change within a hike. When I was sightseeing at the Kilauea Volcano, I noticed a small line of people walking on the crater below. It was more than a mile hike down and it began to rain pretty steadily. I could not pass up the opportunity to see this natural wonder up close. I grabbed my hiking shoes and hoodie out of the car. It was cold, wet but absolutely memorable. When I was a new traveler, my luggage would consist of pretty dresses and sandals. The idea of having just a carry-on bag was absurd. Now I pack with intention and adventure in mind.

Be Open Minded

Try the food and patronize the smaller businesses. Avoid flying to Hawaii and getting food readily available in your hometown. Everyone knows there is no dieting on vacation. Unless you have a food allergy, step out of your comfort zone. Food in Hawaii is a cultural experience. On any given day, you can enjoy food from another culture. The food is a reflection of the diversity of people. In the smaller towns, there are more casual dining restaurants or food trucks. Fresh produce is sometimes grown from a farm nearby or the coffee from a farm an island over. You can enjoy quality food and support the local economy. In Hilo, I skipped the hotel breakfast and found a local bakery with blueberry scones made daily. I think about this place often.

I am 66 years old and visited the islands twice in my 30s. I fell in love with someone there and never saw him again. It’s paradise and wanted to live my life there but it never happened. Now I’m old, not as healthy and too poor to afford it but I dream of the day I can return. My request to my only son is to take my ashes there to leave when I pass.
