Team Hawaii Life Wins at Makaha, Captained By Our Very Own Kauila Sagum

Check out the great surf canoe highlight reel!

It’s Friday afternoon at Makaha Beach on the west side of Oahu. The surf report is calling for advisory level surf in the 10-15 foot range, and the contestants are getting the tents and surf equipment ready for the “Bradah Mel’s Waterman Championship.”

The energy is high, and the conversation about the surf forecast is stretched across the ½ mile beach as the biggest set wave washes in and captures everyone’s attention. For about three minutes the beach was quiet, and everyone knew that the contest was on in the morning.

At 6 am Saturday morning, January 14th, the Hawaii Life team gets the final touches to the surfing canoe ready. Team capt. Kauila “Scooter” Sagum huddles the team together. He thanks them for coming, tells everyone to be safe, and have fun.

Makaha has been the watermans’ proving ground since ancient days. This perfect beach arena brings competitors together from just about any division. Body surfers, long boarders, surfing canoes, SUPs, and even a 16’ inflatable surfing raft called a SUP-squatch.

The weekend couldn’t have been more perfect for the contest. The surf dropped to about 6’ Hawaiian scale (half the size of Friday’s 15’ monsters). The Hawaii Life team won the team divisions, surfing canoe, and SUP-squatch. The team captain advanced into the finals of SUP as well.

This is Hawaii Life!
