Surfing With A Purpose

Hawaii Life Hilo volunteering at Surfers Healing event at Richardson Ocean Park

11th Annual Surfers Healing Event Held in Hilo, HI

A free Surfers Healing Camp for children with autism and other disabilities was held Saturday, November 30th, at Richardson Ocean Park in Hilo. The Surfers Healing Hawaii Chapter provides children with disabilities and their families with the unique experience of surfing with professionals under supervised conditions.

Our own Hawaii Life agent, Kumu Logan-Blomfield from Oahu, flew in for the event and rode the waves with the children in attendance. The agents from the Hawaii Life Hilo office were also on hand to lend support for this annual event that hosted over 100 children and their families.

This is an event that I have personally supported over the last few years. The children are a bit apprehensive approaching the water, but once they are in, it’s very difficult to get them out. The pro surfers are amazing, spending hours in the water and what looks like no effort, picking the kids up and getting them standing on the board.

Friends and family are cheering from the beach, amazed and in tears, watching the pure joy in their child’s eye riding the Hilo waves. It’s even better as they get out of the water, and we greet the children with a surfing trophy and medal and take their picture.

Hawaii Life Charitable Fund Supports Surfers Healing

I am so grateful that Hawaii Life supports these efforts through the establishment of the Hawaii Life Charitable Fund (HLCF). The HLCF is primarily funded through contributions from Hawaii Life agents, brokers, and clients. In addition to our time volunteering at the Surfers Healing event, the Hawaii Life Charitable Fund made a donation to help support this annual event. It is through these contributions that the HLCF can continue to support these grassroots organizations in our community and the passion of our agents to serve the communities where we live.
