Aloha in this blog we are going to discuss the day of the rain on Maui.
You just landed and made the pilgrimage to Costco, and have all of the supplies you need for your trip, or to get you through the first couple of weeks on your return home to the islands. The weather forecast calls for rain for the next few days and now you think well darn what is there to do now?
Let me tell you the possibilities are endless!! Hop in the car and take a ride down to Ma’alaea and check out the Maui Ocean Center and be sure to stop and watch the Whale experience video it is truly amazing. Take your time as you walk through as well and gain the importance of the Honu and the cultural meaning of what the Tiger Shark really is. Trust me you will become obsessed with learning about these important cultural aspects of Hawaii.
After your experience at the Maui Ocean Center, go over to Tante’s for a bite and an amazing Happy Hour that is a fun one indeed. You are here located centrally on the island at this point as well so now the world is your Oyster.
Your mind and Instagram may say, “let’s go to Hana and see the waterfalls,” but let me caution you on the roads can become flooded out as flash floods occur quickly. Instead if you are here in whale season, I would suggest stopping by the Vista Point between Lahaina and Kihei, with a pair of binoculars you can surely catch some amazing sights.
If sitting in the car is not something that you want to do, might I recommend taking a short drive from Ma’alaea up the hill to the King Kamehameha Country Club and the amazing Frank Lloyd Wright designed building. This itself along with many replica artifacts and artwork are worth the drive. Not only for the architecture buffs, but something not many know is that The King Kamehameha Golf Club is also a place where you will see many of the Hawaiian State Bird (Nene) or if you are lucky, Axis Deer. If you are still hungry stop by and grab a pupu at Wai Kai Restaurant overlooking the golf course and bi-coastal views. Like I said, it’s beautiful and well worth the trip!
On your rainy day adventure make your next stop be the Maui Tropical Plantation, here you can find some amazing stores like Malama Studio which has artwork and crafts from many local artists that reside on Maui. A very unique artist does Tiny Art, watercolors that are nearly the size of postage stamps but the details are museum quality, all of the pieces in Malama Studio are for sale so you may want to grab that unique souvenir.
After walking through the Maui Tropical Plantation, I would then stop off for the third meal of the day at the Mill House. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu and something that you can easily take back home with you and eat or warm up later.
A rainy day on Maui can be just as good as a sunny day, because tomorrow it will be time to hit the beach and the trails.
