If Hawaii wins the bid, the Obama Presidential Library would attract investors far and wide in its construction, beautiful the Honolulu waterfront, and grant Hawaii its rightful place on the worldmap once and for all.
The library would serve as a repository for documents, records and artifacts of his presidency. The House Tourism, Culture and International Affairs Committee passed a resolution on Monday urging Obama to choose Hawaii as the location for the library. Even some Republicans are supporting the effort.
If the resolution is approved by the full house, it gets sent to Obama. It is more than likely that Hawaii will have to compete with Illinois for the honor. The state would have to raise $2.5 million for a bid proposal so save up your pennies. It’s worth it though. If Hawaii is selected, the library would attract more than $250 million in outside money from donors and foundations for construction.
The beautiful William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Library. Could Hawaii be next?
Robert Perkins, an American Studies professor at the University of Hawaii is preparing the library proposal. He states, “It could be a home away from home for the first family and their work after the presidency. It could be built on a waterfront property and give Honolulu’s skyline a landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House.”
Hawaii has been lucky to have lots of airtime while the first family visits, but this would put us on the map for good. Not only will Oahu benefit, so would the neighbor islands….since we are just a hop and a skip away (in mainland travel times).
The House resolution is just the first step in the process but isn’t that something to look forward too. I’ve never been to a Presidential library. It would be so cool to have one in my backyard. Another reason why I’m lucky to live the Hawaii Life!
