I moved to South Kauai from Canada in September 1986, sight unseen. It was dark when we walked off the inter-island plane onto the tarmac of the classic, Kauai-style airport in Lihue. When we walked to pretty Poipu Beach the next morning, I thought I had surely died and gone to heaven. Palm trees gently swayed in the cool breeze, the fine white beach sand was gentle on my tender “Haole” feet, and the warm clean ocean was a delight.
Poipu Beach remains my favorite Kauai beach twenty-eight years later. Named one of 35 USA “superstar” beaches in 2014 for its consistently clean water, Poipu Beach is renowned for its terrific weather and safe swimming, snorkeling, surfing, and paddle boarding year-round.
Its stunning sunrises and sunsets are a photographer’s dream. Handsome green picnic tables located on the lawn between Poipu Beach and Brenneke’s Beach encourage gathering for fun times. We especially like playing bocce ball while shooting the breeze with friends ’til sunset, and then naming the planets and constellations in the beautiful dark sky.
