Significant commercial activity is underway in the town of Lihue. A roundabout, created at the intersection of Nuhou and Kaneka Road, is almost completed. (For those of you who don’t know where Nuhou and Kaneka roads are, they border the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School.)

The eastern leg of the new roundabout is being created to access the new Safeway development. This development will include the 22nd Safeway store in Hawaii, the 2nd Safeway store for the island of Kauai. (The 1st Safeway store is located in Kapaa). Walgreens, Petco, Jack-in-the-Box, and Shell gas will also be joining Safeway to occupy the 14.25 acres purchased from Grove Farm.

Will this be another “yuppy” Safeway like the one in Kapa’a? And will there be a decent bookstore in the complex? With the middle school and KCC adjacent I’d think a bookstore could benefit both. And besides, we have two active writers’ groups on-island and at the recent conference (May 1) the lack of a bookstore such as Barnes & Noble was discussed; people still want to read a book rather than an e-book.
