Maui Weekly What’s Happening – August 5, 2022

Happy Aloha Friday! It’s the first weekend in August. The kids here on Maui just went back to school this week and it is starting to feel like the home stretch of the summer season. We have some fun events lined up this weekend including Jim Jeffries at the MACC, the Maui Open, Champagne Hale open this weekend as well as a great opportunity to learn about the ‘ulu.

Hawaii Botanical Farms Tour – ‘Ulu Educational Workshop – Seed to Market Initiative

As part of its free community agricultural education series, the Hawaii Institute of Pacific Agriculture is hosting a special two-hour this Saturday at 10:00 am at the Kohala Village Hub.

Learn about the cultivation of ‘Ulu (breadfruit) with Dana Shapiro, co-founder and General Manager of the Hawai’i ‘Ulu Cooperative. The workshop will share practical knowledge about this incredible staple Hawaiian canoe crop, including how to space trees, prepare the planting area, plant, water, maintain, control pests, harvest, and sell any excess harvest beyond your family’s needs locally through Kohala Food Hub.

A planting demonstration will round out the workshop, with a delicious Farm Fresh Lunch, featuring ‘ulu and by donation, will be prepared by Chef Erika Kuhr.

If you can’t make it in person, you can attend virtually. The 8/6 ‘Ulu workshop will also be live streamed on Zoom.
