Aloha friends! It’s the last weekend of summer for locals on Maui. School starts next week, so this is a great time to squeeze in a little fun, music, comedy, paddling, and community connection before routines shift again. This week’s roundup includes live reggae, a Jerry Garcia birthday tribute, Ali Wong at the MACC, Nashville Nights, canoe racing, and a quick Maui real estate update to keep you current on what’s happening around the island.
Andrew Bees
Andrew Bees of Black Uhuru will be taking the stage at da Playground Maui this Friday night. Special Guests Anykine and Nalani Kai will also be on deck ensuring a night of great music, irie vibes and dance all night long energy. Show starts at 8 pm with doors opening at 7 pm.
Maui Pranksters with Marcus Rezak
Maui Pranksters celebrate legendary Jerry Garcia’s birthday this Saturday at Parlay with a tribute show. This is sure to be a night of electrifying jam sessions and laid-back island vibe lifetime Deadheads and music lovers in general will appreciate. Showtime 7 pm. Tickets $25 at door. No pre-sales.
Ali Wong Live
Ali Wong is bringing her award-winning comedy to the MACC’s Castle Theater this Thursday and Friday nights. Showtimes both nights is 7 pm with doors opening at 5 pm. Food and beverage available for purchase pre-show beginning at 5 pm.
Nashville Nights
The Nashville Nights series returns to the Hyatt Regency Kapalua this Saturday night. Live country music ocean front on the Halona Kai lawn is a winner every time. Featured artist is Charles “Chip” Eston. These are intimate experiences with the artist in songwriter’s format. Music starts at 7 pm. Southern inspired food and hand-crafted cocktails available for purchase.
MCHCA Regatta Season
HCRA States will be held this weekend on O’ahu. Take-off at Ke’ehi Lagoon. Long Distance starts next week. Check out Hawaiian Canoe Club for Race Schedule and more.

Uncertainty continues with Maui Real Estate as non-residential owners are beginning to look elsewhere and regulations are hastening the process for them. Savvy Buyers have been identifying and scooping these opportunities. Will you be ready to buy? Many buyers are getting prequalified for loans now in anticipation of the market improving. Investors are refinancing to use equity lines to make cash offers which appeal to Sellers in multiple offer situations or using 1031 funds that have to be earmarked for real estate purchases. As of July 31st, Maui County has 252 pending transactions and 1646 active for 13.2%. That’s almost a whole point since last update. Hopefully, we will be able to stick the 13s as we’ve been in the 12s for a while now.

Kuawa Ola is home to Rivera Farms where I found the best pink flesh dragon fruit I have had. While the season is in full swing, I’ve been trying freeze dried dragon fruit pieces for year-round enjoyment. Ice cream was suggested so my son and I made it out of Coconut milk, dragon fruit, honey and vanilla. Testing it with some Maui limes for tang too. We’ve also been pickling the peel like sweet mango peel and of course cubing it fresh for breakfast bowls, and making mocktails and cocktails. Any other ideas for preparation? I want to hear ideas!
