This weekend brings a fun mix of local flavor across Maui, from fast RC drag racing in Kihei and youth theater in Wailuku to intimate live music at ProArts, an omakase dinner in Kā‘anapali, and the start of long-distance canoe racing season. I’ve also included the latest real estate update, a look at current Maui figures, and a few listings and local farm notes worth keeping on your radar.

Storm Prep Note: Maui County officials are urging residents to prepare now as Tropical Storm Lala strengthens and moves toward the Hawaiian Islands, with Maui expected to see heavy rain, possible flash flooding, gusty winds, large waves, and coastal flooding concerns this weekend. Maui County is not currently under a storm watch, but officials say the main concern for Maui is flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, with rainfall totals possibly reaching 5 to 10 inches. Take time today to secure outdoor furniture and loose items, charge phones and backup batteries, fuel vehicles, gather food, water, medications, flashlights, and pet supplies, and review your family emergency plan. Most importantly, check in on kūpuna, neighbors, and loved ones, avoid driving through flooded roads, and stay tuned to official updates from Maui Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service.
2nd Annual “No Excuses” NPRC Drag Race
For something a little different this weekend, the 2nd Annual “No Excuses” NPRC Drag Race is happening Saturday at Maui Raceway Park in Kihei. Gates open at noon, driver check-in starts at 12:15 pm, testing runs from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, and racing starts at 4 pm. The event features Outlaw, LPO, and Bracket classes, with a $15 Maui Raceway Park fee, $35 registration fee, and buy-ins ranging from $50 to $100 depending on class. It should be a fun one for race fans, hobbyists, and anyone curious to check out fast no-prep RC drag racing on Maui.
Footloose at Maui OnStage
Maui OnStage kicks off its youth production of Footloose at the Historic ʻĪao Theater in Wailuku this weekend, with shows on Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. This high-energy musical follows Ren McCormack as he challenges a small town’s ban on dancing and rock music, with plenty of music, choreography, friendship, and heart along the way. Tickets are $10, doors open 30 minutes before each show, and the runtime is about 1 hour and 50 minutes including intermission. The show is rated PG for some strong language and is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Lo Wolf: Vocal Velvet at ProArts
For a more intimate music night, Lo Wolf: Vocal Velvet comes to ProArts Playhouse in Kihei on Saturday at 7:30 pm. Presented by ProArts Playhouse and Mana‘o Radio, the 90-minute show has no intermission and features Lo Wolf sharing songs and poetry on guitar and the ProArts grand piano for a melodic, unexpected sound-wave journey. Tickets range from $21.20 to $37.10 depending on seating, with $5 off for kama‘āina.
Japengo Omakase Experience
For those seeking a truly unique dining adventure this weekend, consider reserving the Japengo Omakase Experience at the sushi bar in Japengo. Chef Masa Hattori curates a special eight-course menu featuring fresh local seafood and seasonal ingredients, prepared and presented with care. Experience limited to 6 guests on Saturdays from 6 – 8 pm. Tickets $270 and prepaid reservation required.
MCHCA Long Distance Season
Long Distance Season started last week. This weekend features Maui’s premier long-distance outrigger canoe races hosted by Nā Kai ʻEwalu. The Queen Kaʻahumanu Long Distance Race takes place on Saturday followed by the Great Kahakuloa Long Distance Race on Sunday. Check out Hawaiian Canoe Club for Race Schedule and more.

Uncertainty continues with Real Estate as non-residential owners are beginning to look elsewhere and regulations are hastening the process for them. Latest Maui Figures
As of July 31st, Maui County has 252 pending transactions and 1646 active for 13.2%. That’s almost a whole point since last update. Hopefully, we will be able to stick the 13’s as we’ve been in the 12’s for a while now.
