The Maui Dog Blog

Tired of worrying about things like your tax return, rising interest rates, and phantom gain taxes? For a change of pace, let’s give back and help a dog!

This dog would like to crash at your place for a few nights…

If you live on Maui or are just visiting, you can make a difference in a dog’s life!

…Or volunteer to foster a dog for a week. The Maui Humane Society participates in this fantastic program, Wings of Aloha, where homeless dogs are found homes in Washington State and Oregon. The dogs are scheduled to fly out and need a place to crash for a week before their big trip. This way you know you won’t be tempted to adopt if you aren’t in the right position.

Zoe and I volunteer at the Humane Society and it probably makes us as happy as the dogs!

Our family is currently fostering Sasha for a week. She is a senior dog who needed a break from the kennel. My daughter is off school on spring break, so she has the time to apply the medicated conditioner after the beach runs.

Did you know 25 critters are dropped off at the Maui Humane Society a day – every day! so just imagine the surplus of homeless animals on the island. Many dogs are strays that have been dropped off so the MHS needs help finding out more about the personalities of the sweet pups.

If you don’t have the yard to adopt a pet full time, consider fostering a dog for a week here and there like we do. Besides giving the dog some loving, we take photos of the pup and help write up a description on the dog: “Sasha likes long walks on the beach, getting caught in the rain, pina coladas…”

My daughter made this great video to help find Sasha a home.

You don’t necessarily need to be living in a big house to foster a dog; some condos on Maui are pet friendly, such as Puamana and Kahoma Village. Let me know if you’d like a full list of pet-friendly condos.
