When contemplating a neighborhood in which to purchase a new home, some of the most important considerations are affordability, distance to work, schools, and convenience to shopping and restaurants. In my quest for variety and culture in my life, I found a hidden treasure tucked away in the beautiful resort area of Ko’olina — Just Tacos Mexican Grill & Cantina.

Like most small businesses, the owners put their heart and soul into their business, their people, and most importantly their customers. Their love and dedication reveals itself in the service, the ambiance of the restaurant, and of course, the food.

Just Tacos doesn’t just have tacos. If you’re a calamari lover, theirs is a winner! Locals will drive from the other side of the island for their golden deep fried calamari. Then there are the return visitors that dream about it when they revisit the islands and make it one of their first stops. Served with their own chipotle mayo and chipotle honey dipping sauce…as they say…broke da mouth!
Tequila lime shrimp
Another amazing dish for seafood lovers is the tequila lime shrimp. It’s the newest addition to the menu, perfected by the owner who handpicked the special tequila to make the recipe perfect. He went the extra mile(s) and flew back home and had his parents taste test it. Even they were in awe at the presentation and simplicity of this dish that has a definite “WOW” factor.

They even have their own brand which is made in Mexico and is only available in Hawaii, California, and Vegas. Private tequila tasting packages are available by appointment.
Continuing with the authenticity of the experience, the owners designed the décor and recipes after the Ensanada style of Mexican food which is like the area of Tijuana and Baja. It is Mexican food that is authentic to the region, but adaptable to the local area (not as spicy hot!). And for the kids, they make the best hamburgers out of pure Angus beef.
Nothing beats the care and attention to detail of a small business. You can feel the aloha that goes into the service, and taste the love that goes into every delectable bite.
