Laupahoehoe: A Perfect Little Hawaiian Village

Most view life in Hawaii in simple terms. Typically images are of swaying palm trees, beaches, and idyllic villages where everyone knows each other, where shoes are optional, where crime is virtually non-existent, where life revolves around keiki, and cool ocean breezes ensure an endless supply of picture-perfect days.

Time has ingrained these images of life in our Hawaii. Truth is, it’s all this and more. The drive North of Hilo along the Hamakua Coast was once ranked by National Geographic as one of the 10 most beautiful in the United States. Images of Hawaii are even more true in Laupahoehoe. Not far North of the first gulch, residents of Laupahoehoe still live much as they always have. Located almost half-way between Hilo and Honokaa, it’s a seaside village where the simplicity of a disappearing lifestyle has been perfectly enhanced by the necessities of life in the 21st Century.

Small Community with Big Amenities

Laupahoehoe is a small community with big support systems. There’s a library with access to the entire state inventory, an Olympic sized pool and gym, a local fire and police presence, and churches to service the needs of most.

Residents travel mauka for hunting or to find a place to enjoy quiet moments in the pristine forest. It’s a place where waterfalls are almost as common as bananas trees. Centered around a secluded beach park with dramatic coastline views, volleyball and water sports of every kind, Laupahoehoe Point is the place where even my own family normally gathers to celebrate life’s most important events.

Remote Enough But Close to Much

Within commuting distance of Hilo, Honokaa, or Waikoloa, those with long hours are at peace knowing that their loved ones are protected by a safety net of neighbors united in the spirit of Aloha; everyone knows everyone else and they all look out for each other.

With verdant green landscapes and deep soil, most homes in Laupahoehoe are serviced by all utilities, including high-speed internet. Like so many of Hawaii’s hidden jewels, the residents of Laupahoehoe want to ensure decisions regarding the community are made in concert with all stake-holders. A vibrant community association meets frequently.

It’s as idyllic a lifestyle as any on the planet. It’s life without compromise; life with out drive-thrus, or big city complications. It’s life with never-ending ocean views and cool ocean breezes that seem to spread aloha throughout this quiet little Hamakua Coast community!
