Just when you think you have seen it all, nature proves you wrong. I was paddling with my fellow Kawaihae Canoe Club members out on beautiful Kawaihae Bay last week when suddenly a Humpback whale arched its whole body out of the water in a beautiful breach. The picture actually shows his second breach; the first was so sudden it caught everyone by surprise, we nearly dropped our paddles.
As he emerged out of the water the second time, it seemed like he was breaching in a slow motion movie just for our benefit. He crashed into the water and everyone in the canoe sat in awed silence as we watched him submerge his huge hulk-of-a-body back into the deep blue. Thanks to George Fry, who had his camera ready, I’m able to share with you this amazing spectacle.

When it was all over, everyone sat in stunned silence for a few minutes, trying to absorb what we had witnessed, in a fleeting moment, before breaking into a riot of conversation. Your Hawaii Life Real Estate agent, Bates, is the second person in the canoe on the left.
