Recently I dropped in on a Friday afternoon open house at Kaunaʻoa at Mauna Kea Resort to see two of the three of the paired “hale” that were listed at that time – plus a gorgeous single family home for sale. I was surprised to discover the last time I blogged about one of my favorite Kohala Coast resort communities was in 2018 when I sponsored and attended a Kahilu Theatre “Gold Concert” in a private residence there.
Time to write a refresher on the Kaunaʻoa at Mauna Kea Resort community – and let you know what is currently for sale there.

Basics: Kaunaoʻa at Mauna Kea Resort
In case you did not click through the link to the blog post about the Kahilu Gold series, here is a slightly updated version of what I wrote about the Kaunaʻoa community:
This 52-acre gated community within the Resort takes its name from the bay fronting the Mauna Kea Beach hotel – which in turn takes its name from the endemic flowering vine found along the coast (think of the Mauna Kea Resortʻs logo). It consists of only 20 paired townhomes (“Halia Hale”) and 24 ocean view homes sites where many custom homes are already built. Homes have been designed by a roster of architects known for their Hawaiʻi resort style, including Mark deReuss, Stephen Green, Shay Zak, Paul Bleck, and Matthew Kilgore.
Besides the location which allows owners to access the beach and both Hapuna Beach and Mauna Kea Beach hotels, perhaps one of the biggest appeals is Kaunaʻoaʻs private amenity area which includes a pool, spa, wine lockers, concierge, and a par 3 practice course for golfers.
Currently Listed Homes for Sale at Kaunaʻoa

There is only one custom home currently listed for sale at Kaunaʻoa. The listing description on this home is a bit sparse, so let me try to paint the picture. The setting is an elevated corner lot – homes could be built above, but not on the sides of your view plane to the ocean. The 6-bedroom home is constructed around two sides of a generous pool and gathering area, with a central home and a separate detached guest wing. Each of the guest rooms is unique – one has an entire wall of built in bunk beds.

The central wing is designed for true indoor-outdoor living. Currently in use as a short term vacation rental, a new owner could continue to rent when not in residence, or simply keep as their familyʻs legacy property.
If your preference – or price point – leans you towards the paired Halia Hale homes, there are currently two available, with slightly different floor plans.
- The 4 bed/4.5 bath Halia Hale 10B is asking $6,595,000. Also offered as a fully furnished vacation rental.
- The 4 bed/3.5 bath Halia Hale 2A is asking $6,275,000. This one is not currently a rental.
