Kalihiwai Ridge’s Best-Kept Secret: Stone Dam

Located at the base of Mount Namahana is one of the north shore’s best-kept secrets, the Stone Dam. Tiers of water cascade down the landscape, creating several pools and a large swimming area. Besides simply enjoying the view and the serene surroundings, visitors can partake in both fishing and swimming here.

Constructed in 1880 with the intention to assist in water retention for sugar cane production, the dam continues to be crucial to the farming operations across the Wai Koa Plantation, a working farm on 500 private acres. The plantation has changed hands many times over the past century and currently belongs to the Porter family. They are great stewards of the land and of the community and have worked hard to preserve and restore the property.

The Porter family has developed the 5-mile Wai Koa Loop trail, which winds through the largest mahogany forest in the U.S., peaceful ponds, panoramic mountain views, and the Stone Dam. There are shaded areas and tables for picnicking at the dam and along the trail.

There are several ways to access the trail to the Stone Dam, which can be walked, jogged, or biked. The first is through the gate at Common Ground off Kuawa Rd. in Kilauea. Park at the back lot and follow the signs through the gates. The trail here is flat and leads you straight to the dam, which will be on your left hand side.

The second access point is at Anaina Hou Community Park off of Kuhio Hwy. At this location, you have the option of renting bikes from the Namahana Café. The last access point is off Kahiliholo Rd in Kalihiwai Ridge, through the dog park. A sun hat and some bug spray are highly recommended on whichever route you take.
