It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

If you are anywhere near my age, you remember Mr. Rogers. You probably remember his theme song, “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” too. It’s a well-known and well-loved song. It is also a very meaningful song.

Even if you don’t remember all of the lyrics, you probably know it’s a direct call to love our neighbors. Perhaps Mr. Rogers’ message is more timely than ever before! But, I’m not here today to debate the importance of love and acceptance. That’s a given. I’m here to speak about neighborhoods. Hawaii neighborhoods to be more specific.

What are You Looking for in Where You Want to Live?

If you are looking to buy a home, you likely have certain features in mind. You also have a demographic area in mind. Most buyers do. Location is usually at the top of the list for buyers. Convenience, price range, commute, activities, weather,  etc., all come into play. In Hawaii, we are fortunate to have many wonderful neighborhoods. We have something for everyone. Are you looking for old Hawaii charm? Does a newer, well-planned suburban community sound more appealing? Or, are you an urban core kind of dweller? Do you want to live up-country or do the lights, hustle and bustle of Waikiki call to you?

Neighborhoods in Hawaii are Full of Diversity

Regardless of your lifestyle choices and housing preferences, one thing you’ll find in all of our Hawaii neighborhoods is diversity. Granted, some neighborhoods may have a larger military population. Others, may have more local residents, mainland transplants, or part-time residents, but in any Hawaii neighborhood, you will find diversity. That’s because Hawaii is a rainbow state. We are one of the most racially diverse places in the world. And for the most part, we all live in harmony. And, that is a beautiful thing.

So, if you are looking for the right neighborhood for you and your family, just know that wherever you choose to live, you’ll find yourself surrounded with a mixed plate of people and cultures. Yes, each neighborhood has its own personality. It’s own vibe, sort of speak. But, each Hawaii neighborhood, no matter how different, shares one thing in common — diversity. Our Hawaii neighborhoods consists of people from every walk of life forming an ethnic mosaic. A very rich and vibrant mosaic.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

In the words of Mr. Rogers’ theme song, “I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you, I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.” In Hawaii, that’s just what we do. We live in neighborhoods with people just like you and with people very different from you. Different from me. But, “Since we’re together, might as well say, would you be my, could you be my, won’t you be my neighbor?”

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood indeed!
