Hiking to Kalalau, Kauai: On a Clear Day, How It Will Astound You

Conditions were perfect for our hike along the initial ocean side portion of Kalalau Trail on north shore of Kauai, at Ke’e Beach. Clear skies, 82 degrees, and a dry trail. No mud? Stellar.

“The Kalalau is a tough trail and even seasoned hikers should not attempt a round-trip hike to the end,” states the authors of Kauai Trailblazer. Climbing the initial rocky ramp was challenging and I was the turtle of our group. “Never mind,” I thought, as I carefully made my way. We were rewarded with this view of Ke’e Beach. Barbra Streisand’s “On a Clear Day” popped into my mind.

The ferns, ti plants, and lauhala trees along the trail were out of Jurassic Park. The air was clean, the light was wonderful. And then we came upon this view of Na Pali. Astounding.

I was happy to return to Ke’e Beach safely, wade in the water, and toast our Kalalau hike with a cold Stella.

I love my Kauai life.
